Yo! I'm chantelle I have been sewing for 14 years. I have always been involved in arts and crafts all my life, everyday I would create something new I couldn’t live a day without being creative and drawing or making something. I have creative blood flowing though my veins and nothing in this world could ever stop me from sewing, knitting or drawing. So for this dress I decided to Create a really simple pattern I love working with simple shape and making the garment perfect it's really hard to make a simple garment look beautiful. I love this way of designing because it excites me and it made me feel pleasure in designing the dress. I love designing my own session from scratch and making my own wardrobe it's so liberating and I think you should do it as well. for this dress I created a batwing top detail and the bottom was a circle skirt I did it over size so it would have that really draped kind of big and like that really oversized look it really helps to make it look stylish. And when I finish this dress I decided not to use my usual method I really wanted it to have a really handmade feel I actually like my dresses to look like they've been made by hand it just makes it look a little bit more special and all of the work that gets put into it looks beautiful. so for this dress, I actually spent two hours hand Hemming every single detail of the neckline and the skirt and sleeves.
The first time I learned to sew was with my grandmother I was 10 years old. Everyday she made chocolate cookies and fresh orange juice with the bits of pulp in it for our evening tea after school when she collected me and took me home. During this time we would sit in the living room watch TV and practice hand sewing cushions, repairing hems, pockets and sleeves I learned a lot of techniques and had ton of fun while learning. And learning this gave me a strong foundation in hand sewing. I also had many other interests I loved drawing, painting, knitting and sewing but over 2 years my interest in sewing grew stronger it was my favorite craft! At 12 years old I asked for a sewing machine and I received my first machine on my 12th birthday it was a small simple machine with only 2 stitch settings on it but I was absolutely thrilled by the machine. The sewing machine was bewildering as first I had no idea and no guidance on how to use it so I needed to figure it out myself; I’m an achiever I like to get things done so I decided to just do it. And so I did I started by cutting up old pieces of clothes and just practiced sewing two pieces of fabric together for the first time. I practiced everyday all day, after school and on the weekends I was fixated by it. I failed sometime, but I wasn’t afraid of failure because I enjoyed myself. And the only thing I want you to do is enjoy yourself whilst sewing don’t be afraid to fail. YOU will fail but learn from your mistakes. I upgraded my sewing machines throughout the years and improved my skills.
